A Poet's Dictionary
There are different terms for things used in poetry and different types of poetry that you may not be familiar with. Here are a few definitions:
Alliteration- Use of two or more words in a line that begin with the same sound or that have the same sound cluster.
Limerick- A humorous poem or verse that is five lines long. The first, second, and fifth rhyme with each other, each line having an accent. The third and fourth rhyme with each other, and each have an accent also.
Onomatopoeia- Using words that imitate natural sounds like bang, crash, or splat.
Personification- Giving an everyday object human characteristics, such as emotions.
Prose- A type of writing resembling poetry in content, that doesn't have metrical structure, but may resemble poetry in structure or style.
